In our current environment, it’s very easy to be an unhealthy eater. People have very busy lives and there are systems in place that make it easier and sometimes cheaper to pick up a pizza than buy a salad.
- Conduct research to figure out why people eat unhealthy
- Create an app that could provide alternative healthy options
Proposal
Interview people to determine what kind of app they need to solve their unhealthy eating habits and then designing an app based on these findings.
- Researcher: Gathering and analyzing the information gathered
- Designer: Using the knowledge gathered in the research phase to create sketches, prototypes and final concepts
Process
To the research!
Survey – interview people who are interested in improving their health by eating better.
Diary – ask people to take note of the times they eat an unhealthy meal and ask them to explain why they made that decision.
Interviews – Although getting people to fill out a diary is a great idea, I worry that requesting an individual to fill out an entry every time an unhealthy meal is eaten, this will actually cause them to eat better, therefore skewing the results. I think that in person interviews at a pizza place or burger joint after they have eaten their meal might yield better results.
Strategize. Now that all of the data has been collected, the interviews have been done lets put that information together and create an Empathy Map to better understand our user. We should then take a closer look at that user’s day to determine when and where they might decide to get an unhealthy meal. After that’s done, we’ll create a few How Might We statements in order to look at the situation differently in order to come up with some creative ideas to solve this issue.
More testing! To see if this initial idea is a good one, I created a quick landing page that explains what the app is about, then uploaded it to usertesting.com to see what people thought about it. The feedback was awesome.
Next steps
App layouts. I will now start to put together some layouts based on the research that I gathered by putting together some very basic prototypes so that I can test these ideas with users to see if the concept is working or not.
Development. Since this is a personal project I will need to work on finding someone to work on the development. Although I am good with HTML, CSS and javascript, I don’t think I am capable of creating a full app on my own. I have a few people in mind already for this task.
